ROSE Community Transformers Training
The
Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE) team joined us in Boston once again to host a Community Transformer training for the 3rd year in a row. 17 community members completed the training, joining the 35 other Breastfeeding Coalition members who are certified ROSE transformers. The participants will now begin to provide peer support at our local
support groups.

The Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI) and Northeastern Crossing are partnering to offer a community-based training on the Boston Data Portal. The training will cover the Boston Data Portal, an online platform where visitors of all experience levels can browse, map, analyze, and download a variety of data describing the people, places, and neighborhoods of Boston.

Parents & caregivers are critical in developing literacy skills in early childhood. Join a Parent-Child Reading Group through BPS Parent University to read alongside your child and other families:
Elementary school students and an adult family member come together once a week to read and
discuss some wonderful books that speak to the experiences and concerns of the families. Children strengthen their skills, parents learn how to engage their children in deep thinking about books, and families experience the joy of sharing books together. The reading groups take place throughout the Spring.
We entered this month with Read Across America Day on March 1st, hosted by
The National Education Association. Their website has an abundance of reading resources for families, including a reading calendar celebrating the diversity of young readers.

Explore data related to child and family well-being.
Family reading time is a great opportunity for toddlers & young kids to deepen their vocabulary, grow their creativity, and work on their listening skills -- and it's also a valuable time for older children as well! According to the
Kids and Family Reading Report (Scholastic, 2016,) reading aloud time drastically decreases as children get older (see graphic below,) but this doesn't mean that older children dislike this shared reading time.
Out of children in the 6-11 age range who did/do read aloud with their parents, 87% said that they loved it. For both the parents and the children surveyed in this report, the top reason they enjoyed reading loud was because it was/is a special time with each other.
